The Mangalore Pub Incident

A gang of 40 gundas barge into a pub in Mangalore and attacks women. They beat women, insult them and molest them. The extremist gang calls itself Sri Ram Sene. Sri Ram Sene's chief Pramod Muthalik has said the issue is minor. He calls for discussion about the actual issue - women going to pubs.

The state chief minister B.S.Yediyurappa initially declined to comment on whether the government is going to ban the fundamentalist outfit. Later he came out saying banning the organization will not solve any problem. What was surprising was he later announced that the government of Karnataka will not allow pub culture. He openly stated "this is not our culture, we will not allow it". In a recent media interview he said, thinking himself a shrewd diplomat, the government will not allow pub culture and on the other hand they will deal with people who take the law in their hands firmly.

Till date no victim has formally lodged a police complaint fearing the gangsters. The sense of insecurity is clearly visible.

Now, several questions have to be answered.

  • Is Yediyurappa led BJP government incapable of going against Sri Ram Sene?
  • Will the government not provide enough security to victims and witnesses so that they come forward and help the legal course of action move faster?
  • What culture is the chief minister talking about? In the Hindu culture, women have been oppressed for several centuries. Women were not provided good education, were not allowed to go out and work, were not allowed to remarry and so on and so forth. The society has changed. The culture has changed. Women are empowered and treated at par men. We live in a free world. It is sad our chief minister thinks pub culture is immoral. It will not be surprising if, tomorrow, he comes out calling women working is not our culture and will not be allowed to do so.
  • Yediyurappa blatantly accuses the opposition of conspiring against the government. Are we going to buy these FUDs?

No doubt the unfortunate incident has become a national issue. Let's watch and whether the central government does something to help the victims.

Your analogy is out of place.

Your analogy is out of place. Freedom to go to pub isn't comparable to freedom to physically assault women.

chaos was the result.. not the initial factor

the news has been one sided...

dont kill the mongoose... when the snake has been the killer

Those girls in the pubs thought they knew how to be safe

to be drugged and 'psychologically altered' to allow themselves be abused in the pubs

Sadly, the ram sene didnt attack so violently without provocation....
They were constantly being abused verbally, for weeks at end, being called 'monkeys' , 'son of a bitch' etc...

No man would like to be called a son of a bitch...

Sorry that things became violent...

But Pub culture will cause a lot of trouble and destability

Be it freedom and liberty... or be it discipline, ... both should be in moderation...

Too much liberalisation is what has been happening as of now...
And thats the reason for the chaos

As a auto-rickshawdriver, I can give u an analogy, if all people on the roads ask for 'liberalisation', it would be like lifting all rules , ... what would happen if traffic rules are lifted? There wil be initial happiness and a sense of freedom... and in a short time, there will be chaos and distress , irreversible usually

Sorry,
please do not reply,
i rarely get a comp to come online

I am a BCom graduate who forsake MBA plans so as to drive a rickshaw and feed my family...

What does the liberal press of today do?
be it Bangalore mirror, or times of india... they portray us autodrivers as evil and criminal

Could we also make stereotypes of the press?
Couldnt we say that they are porn printers who use pictures of naked foreign shameless women to sell more copies?

i am really upset about all this pleas for liberalisation... its horrible, and one sided...

When a person I knew ( a driver too) returned a purse containing lakhs to the owner, the papers publish it as "there are good among the auto-drivers too"... doesnt that mean that they assume a (majority of us hardworking, polluted air breathing, police brutality enduring drivers) are criminals???

Sorry,
I didnt know where to put this on the internet...
I dont have a blog of my own,
And please dont take the trouble to reply to me,
I am unlikely to stumble upon it again

It is okay, if you do not

It is okay, if you do not reply. There are other readers who might care.

I don't buy this story. Even if they were abused they have no right to indulge in acts of terrorism. There are civilized ways to protect one's own fundamental rights.

"But Pub culture will cause a lot of trouble and destability"
Rowdies who attack innocent women, beat them, molest them have no right to talk about problems of the society. The biggest problem of all are these men - The so called Ram Sene. It is sad the chief minister did not ban the organization.

Again, it's an inappropriate argument. Fact is fact. Ram Sene activists insulted girls and women in public. What the media thinks about auto rickshaw drivers is not related to this issue at all.

Re: you sucks, learn abt the fact

What facts are you talking about? I don't expect anybody to tell me to blog about public issues. I write on my own. If you have an actual reason to not appreciate the blog, why don't you tell us what it is?
